The Family of George W. Roberts (1842–1911)
                           of Wakulla County

1 The marriages of Jackson Roberts (ca 1806–1870’s) to Sarah (ca
   1812–1860’s) and to Mary W.(b. ca 1845)
The household of Jackson and Sarah Roberts appears in the
seventh precinct of Gadsden County, Florida in the 1850
census and in the Apalachicola district of Franklin County in
the 1860 census, Jackson’s occupation given as farmer both
times. The household of Jackson and Mary W. Roberts appears
in the Ochlockonee district of Wakulla County in the 1870
census. Listings of the names and ages of offspring each time
identifies the family through the series of censuses. The
1840 census had found a Jackson Roberts in Jackson County,
Florida, with age-bracket data for the oldest male and female
in the home fitting the years-of-birth of Jackson and Sarah
given above, and with six children under age 15. This may not
be sufficient evidence for establishing identity with the
     later-known family.
Mary was probably the mother of the four children in the home
in 1870, their ages four months to six years. On that
assumption Generation 2 given below is divided by a dashed
line. Those named above the line are offspring of the first
marriage (their mother Sarah), on good census evidence, and
those below probably all belong to the second marriage. Mary
Roberts, evidently widowed, headed a household in the
Ochlockonee district in the 1880 census, and had with her the
first three of the second set of children.

  2 James D. Roberts (b. 1870)

Collective note on Generation 2: For those siblings of George W.
Roberts not endnoted, no further information is in hand. There
was a Thomas or Tom Roberts in the Curtis Mills community, with
wife Lou Roberts, in the late 1800’s; his descendants are
nearby. No information establishing his identity with the
subject family has been gained. That Mary (b. ca 1852) was not
reported in the Jackson and Mary Roberts home in 1870 may be
evidence that she had married by then—possibly in Wakulla
County. Green, Delila, and Martha were reported in the 1880
households of both the widow Mary Roberts (probably the mother
of all three) and their half-brother George, the girls then ages
14 and 12, and Green 16. (This assumes that the 12-year-old girl
whose name looks like “Lanty” in Mary’s home was Martha,
possibly listed by an affectionate name rooted in a middle
name.) James D., the last, was reported only in the 1870 census,
  apparently.
           ------------------------------------------------

2 The marriages of George W. Roberts to Mary Ann Lewis Roberts (ca
1849–1884) and to Julia Nan “Mintie” Lewis Roberts (1862–19__)
The first marriage, to Mary Ann Lewis, was made between 1870
and 1874, after George’s Confederate Army service in which he
had been captured at Gettysburg and held in a Union prison
until the end of the war. The marriage to Mintie was made in
1889, five years or more after Mary Ann’s death. Mintie
     survived George and later married J. A. Sunday (b. ca 1855 )
when she was 50 years old or more; she is usually remembered
as Mintie Sunday. The 1920 census report for the Sunday
household indicates that she had no children in that
     marriage.
Mary Ann Lewis appears in the 1870 census for the Ochlockonee
district of Wakulla County as a 20-year-old domestic servant
in the home of Duncan and Lea Redd, before appearing in the
1880 census as the 31-year-old wife of George Roberts and
mother of their two children. No information is at hand on
her ancestors. Mintie Lewis can be found as the 23-year-old,
single, J.N. Lewis in the 1885 home of W.B. and Jeannette
Lewis in the Ochlockonee district—this by use of the fact
that 72-year-old, widowed, Jeannette Lewis was listed in the
1910 census as living in the home of George and Mintie
     (Julia), there listed as mother-in-law.
A notation in the 1910 census report on the household, a year
before George’s death, gives the marriage to Mintie as his
second marriage; it was surely his last. However, data for
the age and year-of-birth of the child Elzie in the 1900
census place his birth outside the period of the George-
Mintie marriage( he was born in 1886, while George and Mintie
reported having been married 12 years in 1900; Mintie’s 1911
pension application gives her marriage to George as March
1889). That 1910 report also indicated that the marriage was
the second for Mintie also, something that cannot be
corroborated in the other census reports, since a first
marriage for her would have been, if at all, in the four-year
period after she was reported as single in 1885 and before
the marriage to George in 1889.It is possible that Elzie was
Mintie’s son from such a first marriage. It is also possible
that he was a nephew of George or Mintie erroneously listed
     as a son.
That Generation 3 below is divided twice by dashed lines
evidences the possibility of another marriage of George
Roberts or another of Mintie Lewis. Nevertheless, the
offspring listed above the first dashed line are the children
born to Mary Ann, while those below the second were born to
Mentie. The question of Elzie is in abeyance. (Spellings here
of the first-names Mintie and Jeannette are taken from 1908
signatures of both women; census reports spell them
     differently and evidently erroneously.)
The graves of George Roberts and, probably, of Mary Ann Lewis
Roberts are in the small Mackery Landing Cemetery near the
Ochlockonee River just west of the Curtis Mills community.
George’s grave is marked by a formal, inscribed tombstone,
and evidently Mary Ann’s is marked by one of three
utilitarian concrete markers. The tombstone of William L.
Roberts of the next generation (just below) is also there.

Notes:
 (A) The marked grave of this Jackson Roberts of the second generation
covered is in the Roberts Cemetery on the Franklin County shore of the
Ochlockonee River near Ochlockonee River State Park. The tombstone,
giving no date of death, documents his Confederate Army enlistment.
The biographical roster of Confederate soldiers shows a Jackson
Roberts enlisting at the same time and place as George Roberts and in
the same unit—Co. B of the 8th Florida Regiment. It shows Jackson
Roberts’s being wounded at The Wilderness (Virginia) and finally
captured near Appomattox in 1865, making it implicit that he had been
in the Battle of Gettysburg where George was captured. However, the
roster also shows a Jackson Roberts enlisting in a different company
in the regiment (evidently organized elsewhere) and making a different
record. It is that company—Co. H—that is shown on the local tombstone
over what is surely the grave of the Jackson Roberts of this family.

 (B) This may be the Leonidas Roberts who married first Sallie
Roddenberry and later her sister Carrie Roddenberry, both daughters of
Sampson Roddenberry. Leonidas Roberts (1847–1905) had children by both
women. That Leonidas Roberts (spelling from Confederate pension
application) of local record was called “Cap” Roberts and lived at
McIntyre on the Ochlockonee with wife Carrie Roddenberry Roberts in
his last years. His grave is someplace in Wakulla County; the
Veterans’ Grave Registration Project of 1941 gives West Sopchoppy
Cemetery. Pension records establish his time and place of birth as Feb
1847 and Liberty County, Fla. That is a year or more later than the
latest time of birth to be reckoned from either census report in which
the boy Leonidus appears in the Jackson Roberts household. The Liberty
County datum is not necessarily contrary, since the family could have
been elsewhere than Gadsden, Jackson, or Franklin County in 1847
 between censuses.

 (C) Green Roberts had one or more offspring and has descendants in
this area now. The marked grave of Green Roberts is in the Roberts
Cemetery mentioned above. Beside it is the grave of Maggy Roberts, who
may have been his wife. Green Roberts operated a ferry on the
 Ochlockonee near Curtis Mills.

 (D) There is a child listed as Martha in the 1870 census only, but a
girl of an age fitting Martha’s is shown in 1880 (only) with a name
that might be read Lanty. It is likely that those are two names of the
 same person.

 (E) Hardy Crum was also the father of a daughter in the first marriage
and a daughter and four sons in a third marriage, after Sallie’s death
(in a fourth and last marriage he had no offspring):
