Primary research interests concern cognitive explanations of personality disorders. I am examining some key processes in Linehan's theory on borderline personality disorder for my dissertation. (Note: Mark is currently on internship at the Florida State Hospital.)

My current research interest concerns borderline personality disorder with a particular focus on the role of impulsivity. Impulsivity is common to many disorders including borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and substance use disorders. However, impulsivity is a multidimensional construct that may be governed by different processes in these disorders. I am interested in using behavioral measures of impulsivity to determine if impulsivity in borderline personality disorder (e.g., self-harm, risky sexual behavior) is underlied by unique or similar processes as impulsivity in other disorders often associated with impulsivity.

My research interests focus on the etiology of substance use. More specifically, I am interested in understanding the relationship between behavioral disinhibition and substance use. My undergraduate honors thesis examined how developmental deficits in the decision-making process (one aspect of behavioral disinhibition) may place an individual at risk for future types of psychopathology such as substance abuse problems.

I am also interested in the co-morbidity between substance use disorders and others types of psychopathology. Additionally, I want to examine personal and environmental factors that influence binge drinking and other forms of substance use specifically in college students.
