Biographical Sketch

Anxiety and substance use independently result in great personal and societal costs and their combination is particularly pernicious. Thus, although she has conducted research investigating the nature and treatment of numerous types of psychopathology, Julia Buckner's primary focus is to understand the nature and treatment of addiction and anxiety. She therefore conducts translational research, using basic science to inform the treatment and prevention of these conditions. Specifically, she has developed a program of research that has thus far focused on three primary domains: (1) delineation of causal and maintaining relations between anxiety and addictive behaviors, (2) investigation of mechanisms underlying these relations (including psychosocial, intrapersonal, cognitive, cultural, developmental, and biological variables), and (3) development and evaluation of empirically-informed treatment and prevention protocols for substance use and/or anxiety disorders. She is currently a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at the FSU and a predoctoral clinical psychology fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, Division of Substance Abuse/Clinical & Prevention Research Unit.
