Poster Session

Students must submit 5 copies of the abstract for their poster. Submissions should be on standard 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Good abstracts include: purpose of study, methods, primary results, and conclusions. Submissions must include a letter of support from your research supervisor (faculty or graduate student). Students should instruct their supervisor to give them a printed copy of the letter in a sealed envelope so that the student can include the letter along with their abstract. The deadline for submission is Monday April 4th at noon; submissions should be brought to the Psychology Advising Office (A209). In order to get your poster printed, the Power Point slide of your poster must be sent electronically by the following Monday, April 11th, to John Chalcraft: chalcraf@psy.fsu.edu. Be sure that your subject header says: Undergraduate Research Day. The Psychology Department will be sure that your posters are printed out on large poster paper in time to set up for the Poster Session on Friday April 15th, 2011. However, it is the student's responsibility to lay out the slide for the poster in its entirety, and send it to John Chalcraft. It is also the students responsibility to pick up the poster when John emails you that it is completed. If you have specific questions about poster layout, contact John Chalcraft.

The poster submission should include the following sections:

Title
Authors
Institution(s) of authors
Abstract
Brief Introduction
Methods
Results, including any supporting graphs or figures
Discussion & Conclusions (This may be combined with Results)
List of Key References, if appropriate

Pointers:

  1. Be brief, but informative. Attendees are not likely to read a very long text while they are standing there.
  2. Be sure that the goals of the study and specific hypotheses are clear to someone unfamiliar with your research topic.
  3. Results displayed in graphic form or figures are often easier for attendees understand than are results presented in text form. However, this will vary depending on the nature of the data presented.
  4. Ask your lab supervisor to show you examples of posters that have been presented by other members of the lab. Pay attention to the length and content for your submission, and pay attention to the format and organization when you prepare your Power Point slide.
