Memory

Memory research is a central focus for a number of laboratories in the Cognitive area. Research in Dr. Colleen Kelley's lab includes studies memory experiences such as familiarity, the determinants of false memories, and metamemorial processes of monitoring and control. Other work in the Kelley lab explores the use of memory in tasks such as problem solving and judgment. Retrieval cues, factors facilitating reconstruction of autobiographical memories, as well as encoding modalities can be facilitators to have access to memories. Effects of memory alterations on the acceptance of these memories as authentic records are being explored as well. Research in Dr. Anders Ericsson's lab includes studies of people who develop special expertise in memory for certain categories of events, which Dr. Ericsson has used as a basis for a model of "long-term working memory". Other work in the Ericsson lab challenges current theories of working memory. Dr. Kaschak's lab studies how memory for particular experiences with language influences language processing at later times. This work also explores the role of memory in language acquisition.
