The Clinical program selects approximately 8-10 students per year from a pool of 200-300 applicants. The small class size ensures a favorable faculty-to-student ratio. All first year students receive on-campus financial support (e.g., fellowships or departmental assistantships) to enable them to have sufficient time for research and coursework. A variety of types of financial support are available to advanced students, and we have a history of financially supporting all of our students while they are enrolled full-time in our program.
Although no specific list of desirable student qualities has been developed, we seek bright, ethical, and mature individuals who are dedicated to and capable of achieving the articulated goals of the program which revolve around producing clinical scientists. This means that students who enter our program have a commitment to a scientifically-based clinical psychology and are primarily interested in research-related careers. They should also possess interpersonal sensitivity and social skill because we strive to develop a cooperative, collegial atmosphere in which people do not succeed at the expense of others. We further place a premium on "fit" with a particular faculty mentor in order to insure that each student has a qualified mentor for her/his interests, and to facilitate a quick start in research training and activities.
Consistent with our clinical science training model, our students engage in research activities starting immediately upon entry into the program. The quality of these activities is reflected in our students' successes in publishing their work and presenting it at professional meetings. Students who graduate from our program tend to have extensive publication and professional presentation lists. Students in our program present their work at international meetings and publish in top-tier scientific journals. In addition, there is a high degree of collaboration that occurs among faculty and students, and among students, both within the Clinical program and with colleagues in the other areas of the Department. Beyond their publications and presentations, our students' abilities and accomplishments also are evidenced by the high degree of success with which they obtain competitive academic, research, and teaching awards and fellowships.
Socially, as well as professionally, our graduate students are a close-knit group with well-attuned ethical standards and a high level of personal integrity. The Clinical area is extremely proud of our current students and the graduates from the program.
