Description
of Current Students in the
Clinical Psychology Program:
The Clinical program selects approximately 10 students per year from a pool
of about 300 applicants. The small class size ensures a favorable
faculty-to-student ratio. All first year students receive on-campus
financial support (e.g., fellowships or departmental assistantships)
to enable them to have sufficient time for research and coursework.
A variety of types of financial support are available to advanced
students; we have a history of financially supporting all of
our students while they are enrolled full-time in our program.
Although no specific list of desirable student qualities has
been developed, we seek bright, ethical, and mature individuals
who are dedicated to and capable of achieving the articulated
goals of the program. This means that they should have a commitment
to a scientifically-based clinical psychology and should be
prepared to pursue research and practice with equal vigor and
success. They should also possess interpersonal sensitivity
and social skill because we strive to develop a cooperative,
collegial atmosphere in which people do not succeed at the expense
of others. We further place a premium on "fit" with
a particular faculty mentor in order to insure that each student
has a qualified mentor for her/his interests, and to facilitate
a quick start in research training and activities.
Our students engage in research activities starting immediately upon entry
into the program. The quality of these activities is reflected in our
students' successes in publishing their work and presenting it at
professional meetings. For example, of those students who entered the
program in recent years and have been here at least one year (and, thus,
have had at least the minimal time needed to achieve these outcomes), 71%
have authored or coauthored publications and 91% have paper or poster
presentations at professional meetings. Lists of our current graduate
students' recent publications and presentations reveal their level of
research engagement and productivity. They also indicate the rigorous
scientific journals in which our students publish and the many prestigious
professional organizations at which they present their work. In addition,
these lists reveal the high degree of collaboration that occurs among
faculty and students, and among students, both within the Clinical program
and with colleagues in the other areas of the Department. Beyond their
publications and presentations, our students' abilities and accomplishments
also are evidenced by the high degree of success with which they obtain
competitive academic, research, and teaching awards and fellowships (See
Recent Student Publications, Awards & Fellowships).
Socially, as well as professionally, our graduate students are a close-knit
group with well-attuned ethical standards and a high level of personal
integrity. The Clinical area is extremely proud of our current students and
the graduates from the program.
